Often times when people say that they live or have properties for sale in Montego Bay you have to cautiously ask exactly “where in Mobay”. The person could be referring to anywhere within the parish of St. James between Trelawny and Hanover, and sometimes within another parish entirely.

Let’s take for example Hopewell, Great River Private or the Tryall and Round Hill hotel resorts, which are typically advertised as being located in Montego Bay. Where are they exactly? They are geographically located in Hanover, and not in Montego Bay or St. James at all, albeit being relatively close to Montego Bay. You only need to drive about 20 minutes or so, from Montego Bay city centre areas such as Harbour Street or Barnett Street, to get to those areas when the traffic isn’t heavy.

So bearing all this in mind, we decided to only consider neighbourhoods that can actually be found within the parish of St. James. Also, we have mostly restricted our lists to areas that can be found within the heart of Montego Bay, with the exception of a few notable localities along the coast which we found we could not overlook.  As a result, we have disregarded inland areas (e.g., Adelphi, Cambridge or Kempshot) which could easily have been added to either of the two lists compiled below.

As with our previously published article on the best places to live in Kingston & St. Andrew, this guide focuses on neighbourhoods in the Montego Area that Jamaicans as a whole would consider somewhat safe to live in. The locations were selected solely based on the reputation of the various areas according to persons living in the city. They were not compiled using scientific and statistical data.

Here are the neighbourhoods that topped the list.

  1. Bogue Heights
  2. Brandon Hill
  3. Coral Gardens
  4. Fairfield
  5. Gloucester Avenue (i.e., Bottom Road)
  6. Greenwood
  7. Ironshore
  8. Mango Walk
  9. Miranda Hill (Leaders’ Avenue)
  10. Queens Drive (i.e., Top Road)
  11. Reading
  12. Rose Hall
  13. Seawind
  14. Spring Farm
  15. Spring Gardens
  16. The Lagoons
  17. Unity Hall

We’ve also added some areas that you should definitely consider if you’re looking for affordable properties for sale or rent, whether for your home, work or vacation. Note, it doesn’t mean that you won’t find very luxurious properties in those areas as well, as that is the nature of homes in Jamaica.

  1. Albion
  2. Anchovy
  3. Bogue Village
  4. Catherine Hall
  5. Irwin
  6. Paradise Acres
  7. Portobello
  8. Mount Carey
  9. Rhyne Park
  10. Spot Valley
  11. Westgreen
You should also check out some of the the inland villages you can find in St. James (e.g., Content, Maldon and Sign).

If you prefer to reside in the Jamaican countryside rather than the second city and aren’t worried about the extra travel time you’ll need going to and from Montego Bay, you'll be able to add lots of other options the above-names areas. You should also check out some of the inland villages you can find in St. James (e.g., Content, Maldon and Sign).

Happy hunting.
